The pail itself served as the Happy Meal container, with a rigid molded snap lid.

The first national Halloween pail promotion, and the origin McDonald's itself points to when it revives the line. All three pails are orange and molded as pumpkins, and they differ only by face: McPunk'n, McGoblin and McBoo. The pail held dinner first and candy afterwards, which is why so many survive with decades of wear.

A regional test ran the previous year, reported as New England or as selected New York and Boston restaurants, with slightly larger faces and a 1985 copyright.

Identification notes

The single most important fact about these pails is that the molded base date does not identify the year. McDonald's left the 1986 copyright on the pails for over a decade, so an orange, white or green pail marked 1986 could have been distributed in 1986, 1987, 1989 or 1990. Attribute by design instead: all-orange pumpkins mean 1986 or 1987; a colour split with a pointed witch-hat lid means 1989 or 1990; a glow-in-the-dark ghost means 1990; a cookie-cutter lid means 1992 or later. The 1985 test pails are the one early case where the base date is reliable. Collector sources disagree about lid ventilation, one describing six half-inch holes on the 1986 lid and another four sets on the originals and six larger on 1989, so treat ventilation as a detail to record rather than a test.
