McDonald's Changeables turn miniature menu items into robots or dinosaurs. A carton of fries opens into a character; a burger reveals a face and limbs. The transformation is what makes the toys memorable, and it is also the best place to start identifying them.
Start with both shapes
- Look at the transformed toy. The first two original waves feature robots. McDino Changeables turn into dinosaurs. This separates the families, but does not establish the date of an individual toy.
- Match the food shape. Note the packaging, colors and molded details. Several waves include burgers and fries, so the food name alone may leave more than one possibility.
- Compare the moving parts. Look at the face, arms, legs and panels in the open position. Photograph both forms before comparing them with the reference records below.
- Check packaging and markings. A surviving bag or instruction sheet can help establish the release. Record a molded copyright year separately from the promotion year.
1987: the first wave
The first wave includes six food shapes: Chicken McNuggets, Big Mac, Milkshake, Egg McMuffin, Large Fries and Quarter Pounder. These early robot toys are usually listed by their food names. Collectors also use the name McRobots for the robot Changeables.
1989: the named robot wave
The second wave pairs eight food shapes with robot names. The table includes the set codes used to distinguish them, and each name links to a photographed record in the Fast Food Toy Database.

You may encounter different spellings of the robot names in collector lists. Match the toy and set code as well as the name. An under-three McDonaldland Pals toy is also associated with this promotion; check whether a set listing includes only the eight robots or includes that additional toy.
McDino Changeables: the dinosaur wave
The dinosaur wave includes eight transforming food toys, listed below. Its year needs care: references use both 1990 and 1991, and McDonald’s own 2019 retrospective dates the Dino Happy Meal Box Changeable to 1991. Use the photographs and original packaging to identify a toy rather than settling its release from a molded date alone.

When you have a loose toy
- Photograph the front, back, underside and fully opened form. The absence of a molded character name does not establish a 1987 release.
- For a robot, compare its food shape and transformed details with both early waves.
- For a dinosaur, match the food shape and dinosaur features with the McDino roster, then check for later reissues.
- Check hinges, panels and projecting parts for cracks or missing pieces. Move them gently and stop if a joint resists.
- Keep later reissues separate from original toys. McDonald’s brought back a Hamburger Changeable in its 2019 anniversary promotion, so a familiar design can have more than one release history.
