Spot the Dog (Without Spot)

Spot the Dog started out without the spot on his back that the name promises. This earliest version was one of the Original 9 Beanie Babies, and it stayed in production for only about three months, from 8 January to 13 April 1994, before Ty gave him the black patch that every later Spot carries.

He is made from the same white fabric Ty used for Chilly, Flip, Gracie, Magic and Peking, so the material alone will not tell this Spot apart from those.

Counterfeits of this version circulate, and there are three checks worth making before buying. An authentic body measures an inch narrower than a fake. The gold edging on the swing tag should run an even width all the way around; on fakes it narrows to almost nothing on the tag's lower right side. The tush tag on an authentic Spot is black and white, and a red and white tush tag is a counterfeit sign.
